John Hearne was the author of six highly praised novels: Voices under the Window, The Faces of Love (The Eye of the Storm in the USA), The Stranger at the Gate, The Autumn Equinox, Land of the Living and the Sure Salvation. He won the prestigious John Llewllyn Rhys Prize for Voices under the Window. He was an incisive critic and provocative commentator in the Jamaican press. He died in 1994.
