Savi Naipaul Akal

Short biography
Savitri (Savi) Naipaul Akal was born in Trinidad, the fifth child and fourth daughter of Seepersad and Droapatie Naipaul. Her family memoir, The Naipauls of Nepaul Street was published 2018.

Savitri Naipaul Akal was born in the Lion House in Chaguanas in Trinidad, the fifth child and fourth daughter of Seepersad and Droapatie Naipaul. In the year of her birth the family moved to Port of Spain, the capital city.

Like all her sisters she received her early education at Tranquillity Intermediate School before going to St. Joseph's Convent in Port of Spain for secondary education. She obtained a BA degree partially from Edinburgh University in Scotland (1961-1963), completed at UWI in Trinidad (1968), followed by a Diploma in Education in 1973.

She was a part-time tutor in Sociology at UWI, T&T, (1968-1972), whilst her full-time post was as a teacher of Geography at the Convent schools and at Tranquillity. She retired from the latter as Vice-Principal in 1980. Until recently she ran an up-scale boutique in Valsayn.

In her retirement, she describes herself as a busy person who sews, reads, gardens and cooks as well as looking after the house.  She continues to take an active interest in sport. Living in a small but complex island, she regards travel as an essential luxury.

She lives with her husband in the house they built 54 years ago.
