Jamaican women and cultural resistance
Chris Searle, Morning Star

Another strong Jamaican voice is that of Velma Pollard, whose volume of poetry Crown Point and Other Poems is published by Peepal Tree Press. These are reflective poems, verses of lamentation and struggle, the words of a black woman on a permanent journey. Resounding with the notes of people, families and communities, they have a sharp sense of place. Hers is a language and poetical conception that is strong, proud and memorable.
