Jamaica Observer interviews Shara McCallum

3 March 2019's The Sunday Observer Bookends column ran an #InConversation between Peepal Tree authors Jacqueline Bishop and Shara McCallum, discussing the latter's poetry, absent fathers, and 'passing' as a mixed race Black woman.

I'm very drawn to folktales, those of Jamaican origins in particular, but not exclusively. As a poet, I also like to work with fairy tales, biblical stories from the Judeo-Christian tradition, Greco-Roman myths, and stories from any other folk, religious, and mythological traditions that strike me. If I were a visual artist as well as writer, like you are, I think I would be a painter who dwells in the space between the real and surreal. As a poet, instead I am fascinated by the realms of magic and dream and their relationship to our waking lives and our rational minds.
