‘Fortune’ by [Amanda Smyth] ... was my most gripping read of April. Inspired by true events, the narrative takes place against the oil rush in Trinidad in the 1920s. Strong characterisation, great use of symbolism and a captivating style of prose, makes this a gripping tale of human intrigue, the misuse of natural resources and the dangers of playing your luck.
