'fascinating and beautiful'
The Mermaid of Black Conch is a story of love and fantasy.

What I loved was the layers that existed within this story. Aycayia is Indigenous to the Caribbean and we learn bits about her family and people, their traditions and customs. There are also moments that touch on the colonial history of Black Conch and its people.
David's love and patience towards Aycayia is beauitful and really loved the way their relationship grew throughout the book. But one of the sweetest characters in my opinion was Reggie, Arcadia's ten year old son who is deaf. Reggie takes to Aycayia quickly, and considers her his first and only friend. Arcadia has dedicated so much of her efforts to finding resources for Reggie and any of the scenes he's in are so tender.

Overall, a fascinating and beautiful piece of Caribbean fiction!
