Peepal Tree Press deserves a Nobel Prize

Written by Brooklyn Caribbean Lit Fest for Instagram on Tuesday, March 30, 2021

...Long before Dole Chadee, there was Boysie Singh. Boysie Singh’s name struck fear in the hearts of locals during his rein as a titanic criminal whose dealings stretched over the turbulent waters between Venezuela and Trinidad. Between 1947 and 1956 he and his gang were allegedly responsible for the deaths of over 400 people in various deals gone sour or bouts of his capricious criminal whimsy.

His reputation was dreadful and awesome and his name became a cautionary warning to wayward or badly behaving children. He was eventually executed in Port of Spain but his notoriety lives on.

[Peepal Tree Press] deserves a Nobel Prize for immortalising the larger than life badjohns and characters of our little archipelago.
