In Remembrance of Her

Written by Charlotte O'Brien for Caribbean Voice on no date provided

An electrifying, mesmerising tale that interweaves cultural and racial taboos. This novel is populated with characters haunted by prophecy and destiny as much as by a disturbing past.

Guyana is almost a character in itself, permeating ideas, notions, customs and folklore, and defining the relationships permitted while shrouding those forbidden. Dreams, visions and hallucinations create an atmosphere of exotic shadow. Sticky secrets and heavy questions flank the ghastly crime at the centre -- a judge, the embodiment of social aspiration has taken the life of his son. But his voice is absent, except when recounted by others, and the novel takes shape through the accounts and surreptitious observations of the lower classes, servants and nurses.
