Bookshelf 2023: "a good read"

When Bermuda’s elite men decided, just after WWI, to turn the island into a haven for super-rich (mostly American) visitors, importing workmen from the Azores to build a world-class golf course, this was just part of the British colony’s unusual history of colonialism. But it stands at the heart of the novel’s story, as its [female] characters—ranging from “Por-dee-gee” (or “Gees”) to the descendants of slaveholders, and from the descendants of the enslaved to a visiting scientist from Wales—speak in their own voices about life on the contemporary island. It’s a good read.
