[Bagoo] focuses on gay sex and related male anatomy, while treating the quest for affection and love in this deeply homophobic society. Race, class, and gender prejudices play out in barbershops, bars, hotels, and tattoo parlors among writers and other intellectuals, lovers of opera and drama, and ordinary families. Throughout, there’s a fine sense of irony and some very smart writing.
