Indian-born Shapurji Saklatavala was first elected Battersea Trades Council and Labour Party MP for North Battersea in 1922. An inspirational orator, he was very popular in the predominantly white working class constituency. He worked closely with Pan-Africanist Battersea Mayor John Archer, who himself made history by being elected to the post in 1913. Saklatvala was a courageous fighter for Indian independence, against imperialism, colonialism and racism and a champion of the labour movement.
There will be a Q & A and book signing session as well as refreshments.
