Marcia Douglas has been named as one of 10 writers to win one of this year's $50,000 Whiting Awards. Marcia Douglas's latest novel is The Marvellous Equations of the Dread. She is also the author of the novels, Madam Fate and Notes from a Writer's Book of Cures and Spells as well as a poetry collection, Electricity Comes to Cocoa Bottom.
Marcia was picked as one of the 10 writers to show "excellence and promise". The award hopes to support emerging talent by giving winners the chance to "devote themselves full time to their own writing, or to take bold new risks in their work".
Courtney Hodell, director of literary programmes, said, "Every year we look to the new Whiting Award winners, writing fearlessly at the edge of imagination, to reveal the pathways of our thought and our acts before we know them ourselves." She added, "The prize is meant to create a space of ease in which such transforming work can be made."
We are thrilled to see Marcia listed alongside Ama Codjoe, Sidik Fofana, Carribean Fragoza, R. Kikuo Johnson, Linda Kinstler, Stephania Taladrid and Emma Wippermann.
The winners will receive their awards at a ceremony with a keynote by PEN president and Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar.
