Peepal Tree poets sign open latter calling for freedom of expression on Gaza

Olivia Colman, Maxine Peake, Alexei Sayle, Candice Carty-Williams, afshan d'souza lodhi and Bidisha join Peepal Tree poets Malika Booker, Adam Lowe and Seni Seneviratne in signing a letter calling out the repression of Palestinian voices during the current war in Gaza.

1300 artists in total have signed the open letter which accuses cultural institutions of "repressing, silencing and stigmatising Palestinian voices and perspectives". The letter denounces institutions "targeting and threatening the livelihoods of artists and arts workers who express solidarity with Palestinians, as well as cancelling performances, screenings, talks, exhibitions and book launches [based on such expression]".

The list of artists also includes writers such as Deborah Frances-White (The Guilty Feminist), Kamila Shamsie (Home Fire), Marina Warner (Once Upon a Time: A Short History of Fairy Tales), Lara Pawson (This is the Place To Be), and Candice Varty-Williams (Queenie).

The letter, organised by Artists for Palestine, is available to read in full on the Artists for Palestine website.
