Shara McCallum has recorded her poem 'Why Madoman Shouldn't Read the News' to promote the anthology Here: Poems for the Planet.

Heroes Day always gets me thinking about our past and present and how interlinked they are. There are present-day heroes, but somehow I keep going back to our ancestors and thinking that many of them were unsung heroes, and as a poet, I believe in telling their stories and giving them a chance to be seen, heard, and remembered.

For our interview at her home in Valsayn, east of Port of Spain, she leads me to a table covered with a crisp white tablecloth weighed down by homemade cakes and finger sandwiches. Ms Magazine is publishing, on 16 October, an excerpt from Brenda Flanagan's manuscript, Mississippi God Damn! The book is about 1967, a time in which she worked with the famous singer Nina Simone, and what she taught her about living Black and proud in America.
Brenda Flanagan has been awarded the Canute A. Broadhurst Prize, given by The Caribbean Writer, an international journal of Caribbean literature, for her 2017 story, 'To Dance with my Brother'.
The Caribbean Writer announced the prize winners in its Volume 31 edition, under the theme: New Vistas: An Evolving Caribbean.
Speaking about the award, Brenda says, 'I am absolutely delighted to be honored with this prize from a journal that has, for years, been doing so much for Caribbean literature.'
